With the vast array of face-to-face and online workplace training and assessment courses available, it can be difficult to determine which course is best suited to your needs.

For many years the only nationally accredited training and assessment course was the Certificate IV TAE40110 (now TAE40116).

However, since 2016 there has been a new course on the block. The Field-based Training and Assessment Course (10235NAT) is a shorter and more practical course specifically designed for in-house trainers and assessors.

Both courses are nationally accredited, enable attendees to further their career, work as an enterprise trainer or develop their on the job training and assessment skills. So how do you determine which course is best for you?

In this blog we outline each course to help you make your decision.

What is the difference between the courses?

Whilst both the TAE40116 and NAT10235 courses are nationally accredited and result in the issue of a qualification from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), there are some subtle differences to take note of.

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116, formerly TAE40110)

This qualification reflects the roles of individuals delivering training and assessment services and is also suitable preparation for those engaged in the delivery of training and assessment of competence in a workplace context.

TAE40116 was endorsed by the Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) in February 2016 and supersedes the TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

The predominant focus of the Certificate IV is the ability of the certificate holder to train and assess against nationally recognised units of competence for the purpose of issuing Statements of Attainment or qualifications.

This workplace training and assessment course is typically run as an intensive face-to-face courses comprising of 10 units (9 core + 1 elective), and typically takes six months to two years for completion. The courses can cost upwards of $3,000 when delivered face to face, and are run through an RTO or TAFE.

Course in Field-based Training and Assessment (10235NAT)

The course in Field-based Training and Assessment is aimed at workplace trainers and assessors across a range of industry sectors. Consisting of one core unit and one elective unit, the training is delivered face-to-face, off-the-job facilitated learning, and is reinforced by a practical, work-based assignment completed after each workshop.

This course has been developed as a ‘fit for purpose’ nationally accredited course that effectively covers the educational requirements of workplace trainers and assessors that are required to train and assess one on one or in small groups using pre-developed training resources or assessment tools.

The content and context of the course is refreshing and a good option for those looking for a practical solution. Upon completion of the course, the attendees are issued with a Statement of Attainment for that unit, or if the core unit and one of the electives is gained, this will then result in a Statement of Attainment for the course in Field-based Training and Assessment.

The course is delivered face-to-face over five days as well as out of class activities. The Deering Group Training run courses cost $1,295 and are run once a month from our Brisbane location, and can be organised on-site upon request.

How do I choose the right course and training provider for me?

It is important that you first understand what time and resources you have to put towards the course, and what outcome you are hoping to achieve.

If at the end of the course you will be assessing other AQF qualifications and need to be able to issue a qualification, the Cert IV course is for you. However, if you’re looking for a practical solution to implement in your workplace without the need to issue qualifications, 10235NAT may be more suitable.

What to look for in a training provider:

  • Make sure the course facilitator is experienced and can guide you through relevant and practical learning that suits you.
  • Look for a quality training provider to ensure your qualification is credible.
  • Do you want to attend a course or need them delivered at your organisation? Ensure the training provider runs either public or in-house courses that suit your business.
